Everything you ever wanted in hors d'oeuvres
but were afraid to spell.

Party appetizer recipes, hors d'oeuvre or finger food recipes...

Whatever the phrase, they're not just a before-dinner treat any more. They can carry the party all by themselves and look good doing it.

Party appetizers need not be snooty, though. Pickled squid and unpronounceable recipe names won't impress most friends.

Still, you want something with pizzazz, right? Prepare to celebrate the tastes, the ease of presentation, and the fact that we're about to tell you how many of the little morsels to make.

Party Appetizer Recipes

Many of these cocktail party appetizers are equally at home on a picnic, at a barbecue, or in front of the big game on TV.

How Much Food to Prepare

Such a good question, and we have pages of information to help you determine not only how many appetizers you'll need for your party, but napkins, cocktails, glasses, ice, liquor and mixers, and lots more, here:

Tip: Supplement your selections from Party Appetizer Recipes with dips and spreads, and fondues. They're easy on the cook and on the budget.

Presentation Tips for your Party Appetizer Recipes

A decorative platter, or an appealing arrangement of appetizers on the platter, may be all that is required.

A sprig of parsley here, a few mint leaves there. Or try these suggestions:

  • Tie a blanched chive around each shrimp in your arrangement; it's easy and elegant.
  • Arrange Endive Boats in a starburst pattern.
  • Serve Deviled Eggs on a bed of alfalfa sprouts; it looks terrific and keeps them from sliding.
  • Substitute bamboo skewers, cocktail skewers or thin pretzel sticks for toothpicks, where practical.
  • Use a pineapple, apple, grapefruit, cabbage or eggplant as a "pincushion" for Summer Kabobs.
For the most part, though, hors d'oeuvres are naturally decorative and 'presentable' without much help. The important thing is to serve a variety of flavors, textures and tastes.
