Try out the Sweet Potato Fries recipe on any crowd. Enjoy them fried or baked, salted, seasoned, or sweetened with a little cinnamon and sugar.

Any way, they're an unusual finger food treat or side dish, and a real crowd-pleaser.

Here's a riddle for you: Can French fries that are baked still be called "fries?" Or do we have to call them "bakes?" Your call.

Sweet Potato French Fries

4 large sweet potatoes 
Oil for deep frying
Salt to taste


Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into fries about 3/8" thick.

Fry in batches in hot oil (375°) until tender, about 5 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

Salt to taste and serve warm. Serve with dipping sauce, if desired.


Overcooking the fries makes them limp and soggy, not crispy.

Soaking the cut fries in ice water for about 30 minutes (and then patting them dry) prior to frying them greatly reduces the starch content and keeps the fries from sticking together while cooking.


  • Mix 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon together with a pinch of salt and sprinkle over the fries.
  • Season the fries with ground cayenne, paprika, cumin, garlic or curry along with the salt. Or experiment, and let me know.

  • Baked Sweet Potato Fries
    Coat the cut sweet potatoes with a little olive oil by placing them in a large bowl, drizzling a little olive oil over them, and tossing to coat well. Season them, as above, with salt and cinnamon-sugar or other seasoning of your choice. Turn them out onto non-stick baking sheets without crowding them, and bake in a preheated 450° oven for 25 to 30 minutes, turning once.
